Having spent so much time RV-ing in Southern California, I discovered that I could buy a non-resident library card for a mere $20 a year. This gives us access to checking out books, free wifi, and even selected Museum Passes, that grant free entrance for a family. That is precisely how we ended up spending a morning at the Living Coast Discovery Center in Chula Vista, California, just south of San Diego.
As we pulled into the parking lot, a shuttle bus was already waiting to take us the short drive to the Museum entrance. The grounds outside were beautiful, and walking trails leading to the Bay were directly across from the museum.
The Discovery Center had a small, indoor display of everything from jellyfish to octopus to snakes and frogs. There was a nice gift shop, as well as a seashell “touch” display, both of which my kids enjoyed.
Outside on the Museum grounds was an extensive set of exhibits for a small museum. We witnessed feeding hour at the sting ray and shark tank. Then we wandered through the outdoor plant garden and aviary to see rescued owls, hawks, and eagles.
Guided wildlife walks and bird viewing are included with the cost of admission. Three different animal feedings are also available daily.
The boys participated in making a cool crayon rubbing booklet about animal conservation to take home with them. The Living Coast Discovery Center was a smaller, more intimate place to spend time with the kids near San Diego.
