Alaska ~ Alaskan Cruise ~ Skagway ~ US Destinations

Cruise to Skagway, Alaska

by

Cruise to Skagway, Alaska

When we woke up on day three of the cruise, we had already docked in Skagway. As we ate breakfast, we looked out over the harbor and enjoyed the views. The old Orient Express train was parked and waiting for its first passengers. We had a full day at this port, so we took our time and wandered out after the first rush of people left to catch tours.

We walked right into town and took pictures on the caboose of the old stationary steam train.

Then we stopped at the visitor center for a town map and trail guide. The trails were more of a walk than we could handle, so we checked into bike rentals.

We decided against the bikes because there were no designated bike trails, only riding right along the main road. So, instead we went to Skagway Tours and booked the City and Summit Bus Tour for the afternoon.  We ate at a great little place called Sweet Tooth Cafe before boarding our bus.

We were very happy we had booked this tour, which took us several thousand feet up into Skagway, to the “Welcome to Alaska” sign, and across the border into Canada, where we had views of the stunning Canadian Rockies.

The melting snow way up high in the mountains, just like Juneau, resulted in beautiful waterfalls streaming down the mountainsides.  We stopped at the Old Gold Rush Cemetery and took a short hike to one of the falls.

We ended the tour with a great panoramic city view.

About Travel 50 States

My parents instilled a love of travel within me since my childhood, when they took my sisters and I on some memorable trips around the United States, exposing us to historical sites and vast landscapes.

My dad has visited nearly all 50 states, but my mother has visited EVERY one of the 50 states, a grand accomplishment, and a tradition that I will strive to live on with my own family.

This blog is a way for me to chronicle my travels, as well as share my experiences with others.  My hope is that I can be a resource for your own journey, whether it helps you to learn about places you plan to travel, allows you to reminisce about a similar journey you’ve taken, or simply brings you along for the ride.
