Hike 2/52 of my 52 Hike Challenge begins on the Star River Walk. Today I’m not looking forward to hiking. However, I am looking forward to meeting up with a friend that I haven’t seen in awhile. It should be a flat trail, one that I haven’t hiked before. I feel tired. Hating to dread an activity that I know is good for me is a terrible feeling. I do know that I will feel great afterwards. Somehow that doesn’t motivate me today.

Instead of letting those feeling overtake me, I drive to the trailhead on auto pilot. My friend has arrived, and her smiling face makes it worth the trip. We chat easily the entire time and once again, I remember that this is my favorite thing about hiking. Connecting with others at a deeper level, while exercising and enjoying nature. That’s got to be a win! The Star River Walk is easy, only a 2.6 mile out and back trail.
The clouds still hang heavy in the sky. The path is damp, muddy, and partially rock covered in spots. Alongside a short part of the trail, the river rushes by. A fly fisher stands waist deep in the water, and I’m surprised. The smells are not great on this walk. Nearby there are several properties with cows, and the smell of manure fills the air. The trail is mostly flat. We walk as far as we can, and then turn around to loop back to the trailhead.
Unfortunately, I’ve forgotten to take any pictures. It’s not my favorite place to get my hike in, but on a sunny day, it will be a drier and more pleasant alternative to the foothills. I’ve completed it. Instantly, I feel better about the hike. It’s past me, I’ve gotten in several miles, and it was a pleasant experience with a friend. Hike 2 is in the books. Only 50 left to go!
