Sedona was one of those places on my bucket list for quite some time, and it definitely delivered the “wow” factor. I was still unprepared for the sight of the massive red mountains as we approached Sedona.
Here are 6 amazing hikes to explore in Sedona, Arizona:
1. Slide Rock State Park
Slide Rock State Park, is stunning, and popular! The creek waters flow down over the rocks to form a slick, natural water chute for sliding down. Because we visited in Autumn, the weather was not ideal for swimming, but it was a gorgeous way to spend a Sunday nonetheless.
There was a $10 vehicle fee to enter the park, and the parking and main attractions were very close and easily walkable. The State Park has three very short trails, all under a half mile, that are great for children. Our kids spent most of their time climbing up and down on the rocks.
My nine year old was so in awe of this place, that he decided then and there that he would like to live in Sedona. I must admit that I also was seriously contemplating that idea myself.
2. Bell Rock Pathway
The boys and I ventured to Bell Rock Pathway. The weather was perfect. We did not complete the whole trail, but we did hike far enough for them to climb up and down one side of the “bell.” The hike was a total of 2.8 miles and became a bit slippery and steep climbing toward the top.
3. Broken Arrow Trail
Broken Arrow Trail is a 3.2 mile trail with stunning red rocks and a great viewpoint at the end! This is short enough to be enjoyed by the whole family. There are many ATV’s and jeeps to share the trail with.
4. Devil’s Bridge
Devil’s Bridge is one of my two favorite hikes in Sedona. This 4.2 mile hike seems to bring you from desert to forest before rising up to Devil’s Bridge. At the top, people line up to wait for a turn to walk out on the sandstone arch and pose for a picture. The bridge looks quite intimidating at first, but once you walk around the corner to walk on it, the bridge is sturdy and wide.
5. Cathedral Rock
Cathedral Rock is my other favorite, a short hike, at 1.2 miles. It makes up for the length in its difficulty. I found this trail to be both challenging and amazing. The slippery rocks and the steep climbs were a little scary.
We arrived at the top just in time for the beautiful sunset, and then it was ALL worth it! On the way down, we definitely had to sit and slide down several steep sections. By the time we got towards the bottom, headlamps were necessary to arrive safely at the parking lot. Scary, fun, and worth doing again!
6. Soldier Pass Trail
Soldier Pass Trail is a 4.1 mile hike, which we conquered in a rain storm. It only appeared to be a drizzle at first. But, at about mile 2, the rain had other ideas. There appeared to be some caves to explore along the way. I’m confident this would be a beautiful hike in better weather!
There are so many hiking opportunities in Sedona! If you’re looking for a great outdoor adventure, this is your place!
