When you were a child, do you remember adults constantly asking you,
“What do you want to be when you grow up?”
Those who asked the question expected you to respond with what job or career you wanted when you grew up. I didn’t really think much of it as a child. As an adult, I’m guilty of asking this question myself. I mean, yes, having ambitions in life is important.
However, are we focusing on the wrong question? As someone who has changed jobs and careers a number of times, I certainly hope work does not define me. In different seasons of my life, different jobs have worked for me. But isn’t our life about more than just work?
Aren’t we then sending the message to our children that their work defines them? Shouldn’t we care more about their dreams for their life, what drives them, and inspires them to live their best life?
If someone asked me this today, I expect I’d answer the question like this:
When I grow up I aspire to be a wife, a mother, a sister, a friend, an educator, a student, a writer, a traveler, an inspiration to others. When I grow up, I want to feel fulfilled. I want to enjoy my family. I want to be an example to my children. I want to explore this amazing world and connect with others. I want to empathize. I want to share and laugh. I want to feel. I want to be awed and amazed. I want to live my best life every single day. I want to be happy…
Are you living the life you imagined as a child?
Are you living your best life?
If not, how do you envision your own life?
What actions are you putting in motion to get there?
If now isn’t the right time, when is the right time?
