Kansas can be quite a challenging state to visit if your goal is to hit all 50 states. Being from Chicago, there were several road trips driving out West. However, taking the Kansas route was never the convenient choice. Nevertheless, determined to check off another state, we drove from Colorado to Illinois via Kansas to check out the Oz Museum!

Location
As soon as we entered Kansas off I-70, the billboard signs for the OZ Museum appeared. Quickly calculating the location of Wamego, we realized that stopping this would only add 30 minutes to the entire trip, 15 minutes there and back. The Museum was located right downtown 511 Lincoln Ave, Wamego, KS 66547. The surrounding shops and eateries made it a good stop for those passing through town.
Oz Museum Tour
Inside the lobby there was a great little gift shop, where you could purchase all kinds of Wizard of Oz memorabilia. Everything from mugs to jewelry to t-shirts is there for your perusing.
The Museum is opened every day except Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Check the website for exact times. Tickets are $9.00 for Adults (ages 13 and up) and $7.00 for Children (ages 3-12). To enter the Museum, you open the door to Dorothy’s house below.
Fans of Wizard of Oz will love seeing all the exhibits inside, bringing back this childhood classic.
The Yellow Brick Road
Directly across the street from the Museum, lies the yellow brick road, spanning along the alleyway. One cannot resist skipping along the road as Dorothy did! (At least I couldn’t resist. To do it properly, you must also sing Follow the Yellow Brick Road!)
Food from Oz
Next to the Museum, we grabbed a bite from Toto’s TacOZ. The food was good, but the atmosphere is what made the experience.
Other Wamego Attractions
Down the block from the Museum is the OZ Winery, which is unique in its Wizard of Oz themed Special Edition Wines. Bottles with names such as Drunken Munchkin and Flying Monkey are available for purchase. The OZ Winery offers daily wine tastings as well.
Nearby Wamego City Park features statues from the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, as well as an 1879 Dutch Windmill. Catch a show at the historic Columbian Theater, or learn about Kansas history with a tour of the Beecher Bible and Rifle Church.
