Sometimes there is nothing I love more than watching good, inspirational travel movie. Here are some classic travel movies and a few of my favorites:
1. Given
The true story of two legendary surfers who take their young family from their home on Kauai to travel the world. Told from the perspective of the little boy, this family goes in search of the “big fish,” a story passed down from father to son.
2. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Walter Mitty is thrust into an unlikely adventure, when a photo negative for the final issue of Life Magazine goes missing. His life is turned upside down as he boards a plane bound for Greenland, and begins a cat and mouse search for the photographer, plunging him into life-changing adventures.
3. Into the Wild
The movie is based on the travels of Christopher McCandless, who left his comfortable life after graduation, to travel across North America and spend time in the wilderness of Alaska.
4. The Motorcycle Diaries
Based on the written memoir of 23-year-old Ernesto Guevara, the movie recounts his motorcycle journey in 1952 across South America, and how this experience shaped his life.
5. Eat, Pray, Love
A woman finds her perfect world turned upside down after a divorce. She goes in search of fulfillment as she travels for one year to Italy, India, and Indonesia.
6. Wild
The story of a woman who hikes more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail alone, on a healing journey after the death of her mother and a failed marriage.
7. The Bucket List
Two men’s lives are intertwined after meeting in the hospital, each with a grim prognosis. As they reflect on their lives, they come up with a wild idea to spend their last days fulfilling their ultimate bucket lists.
8. RV
This is an outlandish comedy about an RV trip gone mad. It’s good for some laughs, but definitely an over dramatized look at RV life. (The Gornicke’s RV is on display at the Jack Sizemore Traveland RV Museum in Amarillo, Texas)
9. Under the Tuscan Sun
A dreamy and romantic movie about a woman who travels to Italy and buys a home, on a whim, to renovate and find a new life.
10. National Lampoons Vacation
This is the classic road trip movie from my childhood that I had to include on the list. Chevy Chase and his family hit the road to visit the infamous Wally World, with all kinds of mishaps along the way.
11. The Long, Long Trailer
Another classic, comedy for RVers from 1954, with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz playing newlyweds. She convinces her new husband, whose job requires him to travel, to buy a travel trailer instead of “wasting” money on a home.
