Having passed through Amarillo several times, we decided that we would spend a few days exploring the area as we drove the RV down Old Route 66 towards California. Here are four fun stops that we enjoyed while staying in Amarillo:
Located 25 miles South East of Amarillo, Palo Duro Canyon State Park is a beautiful canyon that drops into sight suddenly from flat country roads. With multiple horse stables for riding the trails to an easy scenic drive, and numerous hiking trails to choose from, this is a great spot to stop and enjoy the views.
Upon entrance, make sure to get out to see the Texas Longhorns. Then, it’s a short drive to the Visitors Center, which features a comprehensive collection of park wildlife, fauna, and movies. The Junior Ranger program is available for the kids, a program that keeps them engaged with mazes, bingo games, and other activities. Once complete, they take their booklet to the ranger, and receive a badge. Take a drive out to see the famous Lighthouse Rock. Allow a minimum of 3 hours, or more, if you plan to hike and horseback ride.
2. Cadillac Ranch
Created by a Texas Billionaire in 1974, with the help of some artists from San Francisco, the Cadillac Ranch is an expression of art, intended to baffle the locals. The ten Cadillacs range in year from 1949 to 1963. Most of the cadillacs were salvaged from junkyards. The cars were artfully buried halfway into the ground, all facing the same direction. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own spray paint to add to the masterpiece.
It is a little tricky to find, so I’ve included directions:
Located along I-40 exit 60. Drive south to the frontage road (old Route 66), then turn left. Drive east one mile. Cadillac Ranch will be on the right (south) side; just park your car along the shoulder and enter the pasture through the unlocked gate.
3. RV Museum
RV, camping, and motorcycle enthusiasts take note! Located in the back of Jack Sizemore’s Traveland, this personal collection of renovated RV’s is interesting and fun. The museum has grown to be one of the most popular tourist attractions in all of Amarillo. It is opened Monday through Saturday from 9-5, and admission is free.

4. Big Texan Steak Ranch
If kitschy tourist stops are your thing, make sure to stop off at the Big Texan Steak Ranch. You won’t be able to miss it. The billboard signs are plentiful directing you to stop for a free 72 oz steak. From the gift shop, to the photo opportunities, to the gigantic bear, there is plenty to entertain kids and adults. Free limousine service is even provided from area hotels and RV parks.
If you’re the competitive type, you can accept the challenge to eat an entire 72 oz steak dinner within the one hour time limit. If you can do it, you’ve earned yourself dinner for FREE! You will be seated up at a special table with a timer ticking away for restaurant patrons to cheer you on.
We enjoy eating there simply for the flashy atmosphere. The kids hamburger meals were served in straw cowboy hats, which they got to keep as a souvenir.
