We packed a picnic lunch and spent a sunny afternoon at the lovely Falls Park in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. This was a pleasant surprise and a child’s paradise. Multiple water falls tumble over the rocks of the Big Sioux River…and the kids had a BLAST climbing over the low rock formations. We also climbed to the top of the Observation Tower, located in the visitor’s center, for great views of the area.
Another great spot for a picnic lunch is Sertoma Park in Sioux Falls. There is an enormous pavilion in the middle of five playgrounds, which include monkey bars, obstacle courses, slides, and swings for kids of all ages. Next door is both the Sertoma Butterfly House and Marine Cove and the Outdoor Campus.
We did visit the free Outdoor Campus, and spent a couple hours while the boys explored the kid-sized campfire, tents, plush toys, fish tank, animal displays, great plains info, and a walk-thru fish. There was also a great bird viewing area with sofas, puzzles, books, bones and fossils. Outside there was a garden with caterpillars, ladybugs, and a play area. Further out on the campus were hiking trails with learning stations. Great place to visit with children.
